Quality Point Index—

Enter each course with its grade and units. The calculator returns the unit-weighted Quality Point Index and shows what each course contributed โ€” because the per-course contribution is the part you can actually act on.

How do you compute QPI in the Philippines?

Multiply each course grade by its number of units to get quality points, add the quality points across all courses, then divide by the total units. The weighting by units is what separates QPI from a plain average โ€” a five-unit major moves the figure roughly five times as much as a one-unit class.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the right scale firstMost Philippine universities use 1.00 as the highest mark and 5.00 as failing. Some use a 4.00-highest scale. Entering a 3.50 means opposite things under each, so this is the input to get right before anything else.
  2. Enter units accuratelyUnits come from your curriculum, not from contact hours. Laboratory courses often carry different units from the lecture component even when they appear as one entry on the registration form.
  3. Leave unused rows blankRows with zero units or an empty grade are ignored, so you do not need to fill all eight.
  4. Check the per-course contributionThe breakdown shows the quality points each course contributed. That is where you can see which course is actually moving your index and which is barely registering.

Why units change everything

A plain average treats every course as equal. QPI does not, and the difference is larger than students expect.

Take four courses graded 1.25, 1.50, 2.00 and 1.75. The plain average is 1.625. Now attach units: 3, 3, 5 and 2. The 2.00 is a five-unit course, so it carries far more weight than the 1.75 in a two-unit subject. The weighted index comes out at 1.6731 โ€” worse than the plain average, because the weakest grade sits in the heaviest course.

Reverse the units and the picture inverts. Put the 2.00 in a two-unit course and the 1.25 in a five-unit one, and the index improves to around 1.55 with exactly the same grades.

The practical consequence is about where to spend effort. Raising a five-unit course from 2.00 to 1.75 moves the index roughly two and a half times as much as the same improvement in a two-unit course. Students who spread revision evenly across subjects are, arithmetically, spending time in the wrong places.

It also explains why a single bad grade in a major subject is so hard to recover from. Major courses carry the most units by design, so they dominate the index, and one term of weak performance in them takes several strong terms to average out.

FormulaQPI = ฮฃ (grade ร— units) รท ฮฃ units

Worked example: four courses, 13 units

Calculus 1.25 ร— 3 units = 3.75 quality points.

Physics 1.50 ร— 3 units = 4.50 quality points.

Engineering Design 2.00 ร— 5 units = 10.00 quality points.

Filipino 1.75 ร— 2 units = 3.50 quality points.

Total quality points: 21.75. Total units: 13.

QPI = 21.75 รท 13 = 1.6731.

Notice that Engineering Design alone contributes 10 of the 21.75 quality points โ€” nearly half โ€” on a single course. It is the grade that matters most, and it is also the weakest of the four. Improving it to 1.75 would add 1.25 quality points, taking the index to 20.50... no: to 21.75 โˆ’ 10.00 + 8.75 = 20.50, giving 20.50 รท 13 = 1.5769. A quarter-point improvement in one course moves the index by nearly a tenth.

By contrast, improving Filipino from 1.75 to 1.50 changes the total by 0.5 quality points, giving 21.25 รท 13 = 1.6346 โ€” less than half the effect for the same effort on the grade.

These mappings are the common convention, not a national standard. Percentage bands in particular differ substantially between institutions, and some schools use 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 style increments rather than quarter points. Your registrar's published table is the one that counts โ€” this exists to make the two scales comparable, not to override anyone's.

Honours, retention and what the number is actually for

Latin honours thresholds are set by each university, and often by each college within the same university. Cum laude commonly sits somewhere around 1.75 on the 1.00-best scale, magna cum laude around 1.45, and summa cum laude around 1.20 โ€” but those figures move by institution and are frequently accompanied by conditions that have nothing to do with the index.

Those conditions matter as much as the number. Many schools require no grade below a stated floor anywhere in the transcript, which means a single 3.00 in a first-year elective can disqualify a student whose index is comfortably in range. Some require a minimum number of units taken at the institution, which affects transferees. Some exclude summer terms, and some count them.

Scholarship retention usually runs on a different threshold from honours, and often on a per-term index rather than a cumulative one. A student can hold a cumulative index well inside the range and still lose a scholarship on one weak term.

Dean's List criteria are the most variable of all, and frequently include a minimum unit load โ€” which means a student who dropped to a light load to protect their grades can be ineligible despite excellent marks.

The cumulative index across all terms is what appears on a transcript and what graduate schools and employers read. A term index is useful for tracking, but nobody outside the university ever sees it.

Converting a Philippine QPI to a US-style GPA is not a defined operation. Institutions abroad apply their own conversion, and credential evaluation services differ from each other. Any conversion table found online is one organisation's convention rather than an authority.

Non-academic units โ€” PE, NSTP and similar โ€” are excluded from the index at some schools and included at others. Check before assuming, because they are usually graded generously and their inclusion flatters the figure.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The weighted-average arithmetic is universal; grading scales and thresholds are not
  • Honours and retention thresholds shown are indicative โ€” your registrar's published rules govern
  • Does not know whether your school includes PE, NSTP or other non-academic units
  • Does not handle incomplete grades, dropped subjects or courses under appeal
  • Does not apply per-course grade floors that many honours criteria impose alongside the index
  • Cumulative index requires entering all courses across all terms, not just one term
  • QPI to GPA conversion is not a defined operation โ€” receiving institutions apply their own

Questions people ask about this in Philippines

How do you compute QPI in the Philippines?

Multiply each grade by its units to get quality points, total them, and divide by total units.

The weighting is the point โ€” a five-unit course moves the index roughly five times as much as a one-unit course with the same grade.

What is the difference between QPI and GWA?

They usually refer to the same unit-weighted calculation, with terminology varying by institution. Some schools use GWA for a term figure and QPI for the cumulative one.

Where a school computes GWA without unit weighting, the two genuinely differ โ€” check your registrar's definition.

Is a lower QPI better?

On the 1.00-best scale, yes โ€” 1.25 is better than 2.00. On the 4.00-best scale it is the reverse.

This is the single most common source of confusion, which is why the scale is the first thing this calculator asks.

What QPI do I need for cum laude?

Commonly somewhere around 1.75 on the 1.00-best scale, but it varies by institution and by college.

Most schools also impose a minimum grade floor across the whole transcript, so a single low grade can disqualify an otherwise eligible index.

Do PE and NSTP units count?

It depends on the school. Some include them, some exclude them from the academic index entirely.

Because they are usually graded generously, including them tends to flatter the figure โ€” so it is worth confirming before comparing yourself against a published threshold.

Which course should I focus on to raise my QPI?

The one with the most units where you have the most room to improve. A quarter-point gain in a five-unit course moves the index roughly two and a half times as much as the same gain in a two-unit course.

The breakdown above shows each course's contribution so you can see this directly.

The weighted-average arithmetic is universal, but grading scales and honours thresholds are set by each university and often by each college within it. Some schools exclude non-academic units, some weight differently, and the Latin honours cut-offs vary widely. Treat the standing shown as indicative only and check your own registrar's rules.
