Enter a few tape measurements. The calculator applies the US Navy circumference formula and โ€” unusually โ€” reports the result as a range rather than a single figure, because a method accurate to ยฑ3 or 4 points should not pretend otherwise.

How do you measure body fat at home?

The US Navy method estimates body fat from circumference measurements: neck and waist for men, plus hips for women, together with height. It needs only a tape measure and is accurate to within about 3 to 4 percentage points against a DEXA scan โ€” good enough to track change over time, not good enough to establish an exact figure.

How to measure properly

  1. Measure the neck just below the larynxTape sloping slightly downward at the front, snug but not compressing. This is the measurement people take most inconsistently, and it enters the formula directly.
  2. Waist at the navel for menHorizontal, at the level of the navel, relaxed and breathing out normally. Not sucked in โ€” that is the single fastest way to produce a flattering and useless number.
  3. Women measure waist at the narrowest pointPlus hips at the widest point. The female formula uses waist plus hip minus neck, so both are needed.
  4. Measure at the same time of dayFirst thing in the morning, before eating, is the most repeatable. Consistency matters far more than perfection, because the value of this method is in tracking change.

Why circumferences beat weight, and still fall short

BMI treats a body as a single number derived from height and weight, so it cannot distinguish muscle from fat. A heavily built rugby player and a sedentary person of the same height and weight get the same BMI, and one of them is being badly misdescribed.

The circumference method addresses that directly. It measures where the body carries mass rather than how much there is. The waist reflects abdominal fat; the neck acts as a proxy for frame size and lean tissue. Subtracting one from the other captures something BMI cannot see.

The formula is logarithmic rather than linear, which is why the arithmetic looks odd. That shape was fitted to measured data, and it means the same absolute change in waist size has a different effect at different body sizes.

What it still cannot do is see inside. It infers composition from surface geometry, so it is confounded by anything that changes shape without changing fat โ€” a very muscular midsection, an unusual frame, bloating, or simply a different fat distribution from the population the formula was fitted on.

The honest accuracy figure is around ยฑ3 to 4 percentage points against DEXA, which is the reference standard. That means a reading of 16.5% is really somewhere between about 13% and 20%. For very lean individuals, below about 8% for men, and for very heavy individuals, the error grows and the method was never well validated.

The practical consequence is that the direction of travel is trustworthy and the absolute figure is not. Measured the same way every month, a fall from 22% to 19% is real information. A single reading of 19% is a wide bracket presented as a number.

Formulamen: 86.010ร—logโ‚โ‚€(waist โˆ’ neck) โˆ’ 70.041ร—logโ‚โ‚€(height) + 36.76

Worked example: 178 cm, 38 cm neck, 85 cm waist

The formula is defined in inches, so convert first. 178 cm is 70.08 inches, 38 cm is 14.96 inches, 85 cm is 33.46 inches.

Waist minus neck: 33.46 โˆ’ 14.96 = 18.50 inches.

Now the logarithms. logโ‚โ‚€(18.50) = 1.2673. logโ‚โ‚€(70.08) = 1.8456.

Apply the male formula: 86.010 ร— 1.2673 โˆ’ 70.041 ร— 1.8456 + 36.76.

That is 109.00 โˆ’ 129.26 + 36.76 = 16.50%.

So the estimate is 16.5%, which sits in the fitness range for men. The honest range is 13.0% to 20.0%.

At 80 kg, that corresponds to about 13.2 kg of fat and 66.8 kg of lean mass.

Now test the sensitivity. Add one centimetre to the waist, taking it to 86 cm, and the estimate rises to 17.3% โ€” a shift of 0.8 points from a single centimetre. Take a centimetre off the neck instead, and it rises by a similar amount.

That sensitivity is why measurement technique dominates. A tape held slightly differently from one month to the next produces a change larger than a month of genuine progress, and it is why measuring consistently matters more than measuring perfectly. If you must be inconsistent, be inconsistent in the same direction.

What the ranges mean

Essential fat2โ€“5%10โ€“13%The minimum for normal function
Athletic6โ€“13%14โ€“20%Typical of competitive athletes
Fitness14โ€“17%21โ€“24%Lean and healthy
Average18โ€“24%25โ€“31%Typical of the general population

Women carry more essential fat than men for physiological reasons, which is why every band sits higher. Dropping toward the essential range is not a health goal โ€” very low body fat carries real risks including hormonal disruption, bone density loss and impaired immune function, and in women it commonly disrupts menstruation. The lower categories describe competitive athletes in season, not a target for general health.

Other methods, and what actually matters

DEXA is the practical reference standard, using two X-ray energies to distinguish bone, fat and lean tissue. It is accurate to within about 1 to 2 percentage points, costs money, and involves a small radiation dose. It is the method other methods are validated against.

Skinfold callipers pinch subcutaneous fat at several sites and are accurate to around ยฑ3 points in trained hands and much worse in untrained ones. Technique dominates the result, which makes them poor for self-measurement.

Bioelectrical impedance โ€” the scales that send a current through your feet โ€” passes a small current and infers composition from resistance. Hydration status affects it substantially, so readings swing by several points depending on when you last drank, ate or trained. Consumer devices are convenient and not accurate.

Hydrostatic weighing and air displacement plethysmography are accurate but require laboratory equipment.

The circumference method sits in a useful position: free, repeatable at home, no equipment beyond a tape, and accurate enough to detect real change over months.

What is worth saying plainly is that body fat percentage matters less than the things that produce it. Waist circumference on its own is a strong predictor of metabolic risk, and it needs no formula at all โ€” above 94 cm for men or 80 cm for women indicates increased risk, and above 102 cm or 88 cm indicates substantially increased risk. Those thresholds come from the NHS and are more actionable than any percentage.

Tracking waist measurement over time is arguably more useful than tracking a calculated percentage, because it removes the formula's error entirely and measures the thing that actually correlates with risk.

For anyone with a history of disordered eating, frequent body composition measurement can be counterproductive. Progress in strength, energy and how clothes fit are legitimate measures, and for many people better ones.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Accurate to roughly ยฑ3 to 4 percentage points against DEXA, and worse at the extremes
  • Not well validated for very lean individuals or for very heavy ones
  • Highly sensitive to measurement technique โ€” a centimetre on the waist moves the result by nearly a point
  • Infers composition from surface geometry, so unusual builds and fat distributions confound it
  • Uses sex-specific formulas with no option beyond the two the method was derived for
  • Not validated for children or adolescents
  • Not medical advice โ€” waist circumference alone is a better-evidenced risk indicator

Questions people ask about this in United Kingdom

How do you measure body fat at home?

The US Navy method uses a tape measure โ€” neck and waist for men, plus hips for women, along with height.

It is accurate to within about 3 to 4 percentage points, which is good for tracking change and poor for establishing an exact figure.

How accurate is this?

Roughly ยฑ3 to 4 percentage points against a DEXA scan. A reading of 16.5% really means somewhere between about 13% and 20%.

The direction of travel over months is trustworthy; a single reading is not.

Is body fat percentage better than BMI?

For describing an individual, generally yes โ€” BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so it misdescribes muscular people badly.

But waist circumference alone predicts metabolic risk well and needs no formula at all.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Roughly 14 to 24% for men and 21 to 31% for women covers the fitness and average ranges.

Women carry more essential fat for physiological reasons, which is why every band sits higher.

Why did my reading jump between measurements?

Almost always measurement technique. A single centimetre on the waist moves the result by nearly a percentage point โ€” more than a month of genuine progress.

Measure at the same time of day, in the same way, before eating.

Are body fat scales accurate?

Not very. Bioelectrical impedance is strongly affected by hydration, so readings swing several points depending on when you last drank, ate or trained.

They are convenient and repeatable rather than accurate.

Can body fat be too low?

Yes. Below the essential range it carries real risks โ€” hormonal disruption, bone density loss and impaired immune function, and commonly disrupted menstruation in women.

The athletic bands describe competitive athletes in season, not a general health target.

The circumference method carries an error of roughly ยฑ3 to 4 percentage points against DEXA, and considerably more for very lean or very heavy individuals, for whom it was not well validated. It is a reasonable way to track direction over months and a poor way to establish an exact number on any single day.
