Why the gold and silver tools ask for today's price
Precious metal prices move every day, so a calculator with a hardcoded price is wrong by the time it is published. Rather than storing a figure and letting it rot, these tools ask you to enter the current spot price from wherever you check it.
That is one extra step and it is the only honest way to build the tool. What the calculator adds is the part people actually get wrong: converting carat to purity, allowing for the dealer's margin, and separating the metal value from the resale value.
